How do I set spending limits and controls on a Smartcard?

The looch app lets you set a Smartcard’s spending limit, active days, merchant list, categories, and transaction settings.

Written by Chelsea

A Smartcard is a virtual Visa card that works everywhere Visa is accepted. Smartcard controls give you business card spending limits and rules for when, where, and how the card works. Smartcard control changes require the Smartcards permission.

Set limits and controls on a Smartcard

  1. Go to Cash, then Smartcards in the nav bar, and swipe to the Smartcard. Swipe the row of tiles under it to see all its controls.

  2. Tap 'Spending limit'. To change the amount, type the new one and tap 'Apply'. To change between 'Daily', 'Monthly', and 'All-time', tap 'Clear', pick the interval, type the amount, and tap 'Apply'.

  3. Tap 'Spending days', choose 'Smartcard is always on', 'Weekdays only', or 'Auto-cancel', and tap 'Apply'.

  4. Tap 'Merchant restrictions' to see the 'Whitelist' or 'Blacklist', then tap 'Add a merchant' to add one.

  5. Tap 'Category controls' and switch categories on or off.

  6. Tap 'More controls' and switch each setting on or off.

Smartcard controls have clear limits and permissions

Executives can manage Smartcards. A Manager can manage them when their Smartcards permission is set to 'Can issue & manage Smartcards'. Without that permission, the screens are read-only and don’t show 'Apply'.

Monthly

All-time

Doesn’t reset and stops the Smartcard from working once the amount is reached

  • Touch and hold 'Spending limit' to see how much is used. The tile turns light red at 80% and red at 95%.

  • 'Weekdays only' turns the Smartcard off from Friday at 8:00 pm ET until Monday at 5:00 am ET. 'Auto-cancel' cancels it on the chosen date at 11:59 pm ET.

  • 'Category controls' and 'More controls' save each switch as you change it. At least one setting stays on in each screen. Other control screens need 'Apply'.

  • A daily limit below $100 can decline fuel purchases when a dispenser uses its default $100 hold. looch suggests a separate Smartcard with a $100 daily limit and fuel merchants whitelisted.

  • 'Auto-enter' applies your selected category to every past and future transaction on that Smartcard that isn’t entered yet. 'Linked account' needs the move money permission.
